Teofipol Roots

A few Jewish families live in Teofipol today, though none of them are originally from the area. Nearly all of Teofipol’s native Jews who managed to survive left the town and moved to various destinations around the world.. They or their descendants still remember that their roots lead to this small town on the river Polkva (now the district center of the Khmelnytska region). Since Ukraine became an independent state, this small settlement has been attracting more and more interest world-wide.

It was twice visited by Louis Horowitz, a U.S. citizen from Florida whose Jewish family came from Teofipol. During his second visit Mr. Horowitz was accompanied by his two charming granddaughters Amanda Horowitz and Jackie Carr.

They were followed by Scott Becker, an adventurous American who lives in Germany now and is the custodian of many documents and historical accounts collected by Lou in collaboration with a local historian and other contributors.

Ancestral journey brought Dr. Stanley Friedell from Chicago to the sites of interest in and around Teofipol in the icy and snowy month of January, 2010.
